Sun, beach and big city bargain airfares

March 5, 2012 by

For the AJC

Here’s a round-up of bargain airfare deals for fans of the sun, the beach or the big city:

With a one-week advance purchase notice, travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico (no passport required for U.S. citizens) at one-way rates of $112.70. Delta Air Lines offers this low rate on any of its five daily nonstop flights on trips finished on or before March 31. This is an excellent bargain to pair with deep Caribbean cruises departing from San Juan.

Through Nov. 2, travel with AirTran on any available day of the week to Cancun, Mexico at one-way rates of $163.56. This offer is valid on trips as soon as this week (no advance purchase required). AirTran offers two daily nonstop flights between Atlanta and Cancun.

Delta gets you down to Miami at round-trip rates of $123.60 when trips are finished on or before March 15. Give a three-day or more advance notice of travel. This rate is valid seven days a week, based on sale space availability. A three-night minimum stay is required when departing Atlanta Sundays-Wednesdays — otherwise stay on Saturday night.

The same $123.60 round-trip rate applies on Delta flights to Miami (10 daily nonstop flights between ATL and Miami) when departing on or after April 17. Trips must be finished on or before May 22. This rate is valid seven days a week, based on sale space availability. A three-night minimum stay is required when departing Atlanta Sundays-Wednesdays — otherwise stay on Saturday night.

Heading to the big city? Delta offers a round-trip rate of $239.60 to New York-LaGuardia on trips finished on or before May 23. To qualify, travel on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Add $25 each way for travel taken on Mondays, Thursdays or Saturdays (regular rates apply for Friday and Sunday travel). A 10-day advance purchase notice is required.

American Airlines offers a one-way rate of $119.80 to New York-LaGuardia (seven nonstop flights) and Continental matches this one-way rate on trips to Newark, N.J. (six daily nonstop flights).   Follow the Delta rules for New York-Laguardia above.

Note that none of the above offers carries a ticket-by date. So act fast before these deals vanish.

Sale airfares are always subject to change. Every seat on every flight is not offered at the lowest rate. Since only a limited supply of seats is available, act quickly to make your purchase.

I recommend starting the search for available seats at Kayak.com vs. calling an airline directly. You can also search for the sale at travel web sites such as Expedia or Travelocity, etc.

Washington, DC: Meet Ken Burns on this Civil War history trip

March 5, 2012 by

Filmmaker Ken Burns stars in a five-day Civil War tour of Washington, D.C., designed to capture the story he told in his documentary about the war and its aftermath. For the second year, Connecticut-based Tauck travel company teamed with Burns to create an itinerary that includes private access to some of the capital’s biggest landmarks.

The Civil War saga is told through talks and lectures with experts like Burns, who will give a keynote speech and chat with guests during an after-hours event at the National Archives, and Harold Holzer, a Civil War historian who will speak at an evening event at the National Building Museum.

Then it’s on to historic places connected to President Lincoln and the war: the Manassas National Battlefield (site of two Battles at Bull Run), a home that once served as a Confederate hospital, the Lincoln Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery and more. The trip ends with a farewell dinner hosted by members of the Tauck family at the National Portrait Gallery-American Art Museum.

When: Trips depart May 20 and Oct. 14.

Price:  $3,990 per person, double occupancy. (Prices vary by hotel selection.) It includes airport transfers, four nights in a hotel, most meals, guides, local transportation and admission to sites and attractions. Airfare is extra.

Contact: Tauck, (800) 468-2825, or a travel agent.

Canada: Spring ferry-hotel package puts Victoria within reach

March 5, 2012 by

Victoria, British Columbia, pops with blooms in spring. Tulips, cherry trees and more can be seen around the Canadian city and at Butchart Gardens. Clipper Vacations has a ferry and hotel package that’s good for visitors short on time and money. Prices start at $138 a person for round-trip ferry from Seattle to Victoria and two nights in a hotel.

The deal: The Springtacular Sale is based on double occupancy and includes two round-trip Victoria Clipper ferry tickets plus two nights in the Harbour Towers Hotel. Package prices start at $138 per person, including tax and fuel surcharge.

Upgrades for other hotels are available for more money. The Fairmont Empress, for instance, is  $218 per person, including tax and fuel surcharge. U.S. residents need to bring passports to make this trip.

Extra savings tip: “Like” the Victoria Clipper on Facebook and get 10% more off the package. (It comes with a code to use when booking online or by phone.)

When: The offer is good until March 15 for travel by May 18.

Tested: I found availability for the package on several weekends in spring (April 13-15 and May 4-6) for $138 per person or $276 for two. Sample boat times: 8 a.m. departure from Seattle on May 4 and a 7 p.m. return boat on May 6.

The savings on this package are good. I did the math to see what costs would be without the package for the two-day May stay I tested above. The total came to $476 to $496 for two: $97 to $107 each for ferry tickets and $141 a night for a standard room at the Harbour Towers.
