Huge savings to Asia

March 2, 2012 by

For the AJC

American Airlines today-only airfare sale to four Asian destinations would play out nicely on an April Fool’s Day. But the deals are a reality today!

This spot sale presents an incredible opportunity to travel to China or Japan through Jan. 27, 2013 at rock-bottom rates — rates far lower than those currently published to Europe, Canada, the Caribbean and Hawaii. So why not take the leap and get to these Bucket List destinations for far less than you’d imagine.

Here are the offers:

Inclusive round-trip rates to Shanghai, China are $788.20 and $842.20 to Beijing, China during any season — even peak summer and year-end holidays — without worry of blackout dates. Give at least a two-week advance notice of travel. Travel on Fridays-Sundays are $55 additional, each way. Compare this bargain rate to Delta Air Line’s lowest round-trip rate to Beijing during the summer of $2,072.20.

Or, head to Tokyo or Osaka, Japan this year, or through Jan. 27, 2013, at round-trip rates of $1,289.40 (Delta’s summer round-trip rate to Tokyo is $2,538.40). To qualify, give at least a three-day advance purchase notice. Weekend travel is $50 additional, each way. Again, there are no blackout dates to avoid.

Trips to China or Japan require a minimum stay of any three nights and no longer than 30 days.

American Airlines serves these destinations with one easy flight connection in Chicago-O’Hare.

Don’t miss out on this offer. Buy tickets immediately — or before midnight on March 2, and plan the details later!

Sale airfares are always subject to change. Every seat on every flight is not offered at the lowest rate. Since only a limited supply of seats is available, act quickly to make your purchase.

I recommend starting the search for available seats at Kayak.com vs. calling an airline directly. You can also search for the sale at travel Web sites such as Expedia or Travelocity, etc.

Spring break: It’s Mexico, Miami and Vegas for party people

March 2, 2012 by

What’s “in” for spring break this year? Some U.S. spots are luring more of the party-hearty, based on bookings with a top travel agency.

Cancun, Mexico, remains the most-booked destination, Miami moved from No. 7 to No. 3 this year, and Las Vegas held on to the No. 10 slot that it hit last year, said Patrick Evans, Dallas-based spokesman for STA Travel, which bills itself as the world’s largest student travel agency.

Of course, some things haven’t changed. Sun, fun and beaches rule, and tough times aren’t spoiling the festivities, Evans said.

“Despite the economic situation, spring break is still pretty strong because it’s the iconic thing students know they’ll do each year,” Evans said in an interview “It’s the one area of travel that we haven’t really seen take a hit due to the economy.”

Cancun’s affordable party packages help keep it on top despite State Department travel warnings about drug-related violence in Mexico, Evans said. Other Mexican resorts — Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco and Cabo San Lucas — also made the Top 10 list.

“People realize where the violence is located and are avoiding those areas but not the entire country,” Evans said.

Las Vegas got a boost last year when MTV set up shop at the Palms Casino Resort as its “official” spring break destination. “MTV still has a role in dictating what is cool for spring break,” Evans said. The 2009 release of the movie  “The Hangover,” a comedy about drunken misadventures in Sin City, didn’t hurt either, he added.

Spring break may not be as huge for colleges in warmer spots, such as California, as it is in frigid Boston or Michigan. And when California students get away, they often drive to nearby resorts. When they do book with STA Travel (generally when they need flights), they head for Hawaii, Costa Rica, Europe, Cancun and New York, in that order, Evans said.

And now, the Top 10  spring break destinations for 2012, brought to you by STA. Are you in or out? Wherever you are, start planning in August or September for spring break 2013 because deal-seeking students are booking earlier these days, Evans said.

1. Cancun, Mexico

2. Punta Cana,Dominican Republic

3. Miami (South Beach)

4. Panama City Beach, Fla.

5. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

6. Acapulco, Mexico

7. Montego Bay/Negril, Jamaica

8. Nassau, Bahamas

9. Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

10. Las Vegas

Las Vegas: Rappel Valley of Fire’s red-rock slabs for $99-$119

Do something different on your next trip to Las Vegas, especially if you have teens in tow. Take a break from the dancing fountains, gaming tables or the crowded Strip to see a more natural side of Sin City: Valley of Fire State Park. Awesome Adventures offers a half-day rappelling excursion that’s on sale this month for $99-$119 a person.

The deal: Awesome Adventures picks you up at your hotel, takes you on a hike in this red-rock country just 45 minutes away and then facilitates three rappels — starting with a 20-foot drop and then working up to a 150-foot drop — on this six-hour trip. Beginners are welcome; no experience is required.

The rappel trip usually costs $139 per person, but the sale price this month brings it down to $119 for an individual, $99 for two or more participants.

When: The offer is good March 31-May 15.

Details: I recommend calling to make reservations for this deal, particularly if you have any questions about the trip or the logistics. The trip is suitable for children 12 and older, and kids younger than 18 must have a parent or guardian with them. Skip the flip-flops or open-toed shoes for this tour de rock in favor of sturdy boots or running shoes.

Participants fly to Nairobi, Kenya, and then board a plane to Arusha in northern Tanzania where the safari begins. Nights are spent in luxury lodges in the heart of the natural areas.

Date: The trip is May 16-28.

Price: $4,995 per person, double occupancy. It includes meals, guides, flight from Nairobi to Arusha, lodge accommodations, wildlife viewing via land cruisers, visit to a Maasai village, park entry fees and more. International airfare is extra.

Pack Your Bags: Travel Hacking Cartel Saves Frequent Travelers Money

March 2, 2012 by

At PCWorld we don’t often recommend bargain-hunting sites with a membership fee. But if you’re a fairly frequent traveler, a new deal aggregator called Travel Hacking Cartel is one of those rare cases where paying a monthly subscription fee could save you hundreds of dollars.

The travel site draws on the knowledge of its founder Chris Guillebeau, who claims that he visits 25 countries a year. Once you sign up for membership (THC makes you pay a $1 first-month fee and then automatically charges you $15 to $39 a month based on whether you choose the “Economy Class,” “Business Class,” or “First Class” membership), you get access to tutorial videos that break down travel-related “hacks,” such as how to score deals on airline miles and rewards points, or how to respond if an airline tells you that you can’t use points on a certain flight.

Pack Your Bags: Travel Hacking Cartel Saves Frequent Travelers MoneyYour monthly subscription also signs you up to receive one to three email alerts each week that report the most lucrative travel deals on the Web. Usually the deal involves joining a rewards program to receive free miles, or staying some number of nights at a specific hotel to earn loyalty points for free nights at that lodging chain later, but sometimes the deal earns you miles and points for nothing more than signing up for a major company’s newsletter.

Ultimately, this service is best for deal hunters, not casual travelers who want to save on trips right away. You have to put effort into assessing the cost and benefit of each deal notification THC sends. If you don’t travel often, or if you want to go to specific destinations at specific times, buying a THC subscription is not ideal.

But if you are a frequent traveler, the company guarantees that you’ll earn a free plane ticket (or 25,000 frequent flyer miles) every three months as long as you’ve spent 30 minutes a month following up on the deals THC discovers. If you can’t get that ticket, THC will comp the points you need to earn your free flight. Frequent flyers, you have nothing to lose but the chains that bind you to full-price travel.
