Costa Allegra passengers stuck on stranded ship until Thursday

February 28, 2012 by admin

Passengers of the Costa Allegra, stranded in the Indian Ocean on Monday after a fire swept through the engine room and left the cruise ship without power, will be stuck on board for another few days. The ship is being towed to the main island in the Seychelles but isn’t expected to arrive until Thursday morning local time.

Costa Cruises said in a statement Tuesday that none of the 636 passengers, including eight Americans, and 413 crew members aboard the ship had been injured in the fire or its aftermath. This is the second disaster for Costa Cruises in the last six weeks. The Allegra’s sister ship, the Costa Concordia, ran aground near the Italian island of Giglio on Jan. 13, leaving 25 people dead and seven missing.

The fire on the Costa Allegra broke out in the generator room and was immediately extinguished, the cruise line says. It didn’t spread to other parts of the ship, but an emergency alarm was sounded and passengers and crew members gathered at muster stations on the ship.

The Allegra is being towed by the French fishing boat Trevignon. The Seychelles coast guard reported that two tugboats were dispatched Tuesday to help with the effort, according to Bloomberg. Costa said helicopters were supplying the ship with food, flashlights and other necessities.

The cruise line rejected a plan to take passengers to the nearer Desroches Island because “[t]he disembarkation in Desroches does not assure the necessary and adequate security conditions for mooring the ship and guests’ disembarkation,” the statement said. “In addition, logistics and hotels on the island are not enough: it would require an immediate transfer from Desroches to Mahé through ferries after disembarking the ship through tenders.”

The ship’s fire comes less than a week after divers searching the half-sunken Costa Concordia off the Italian coast found eight more bodies, bringing the death toll to 25. The ship’s captain, first mate and seven others are being investigated for their role in the disaster, according to media reports.

Five Tips From a Travel Expert on How to Take the Best Spring Break Vacation

February 28, 2012 by admin

ORLANDO, FL, Feb 28, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) –
Spring Break is just around the corner, and you know what that
means… time to start planning your vacation. So here are five tips
on what you need to know to have the most amazing experience.

1. By air or sea?
When it comes to airfare, it’s not great news.
With airlines continuing to slash routes, that means decreased
competition, which translates into increased airfare. So where are
the deals? It depends on where — and how — you’re traveling.

“For those of you who are flexible with your travel, it can pay to
wait until the last minute,” says Steven Fischer, vice president of
cruise development at Travel Holdings, Inc. “That’s when airlines and
cruises need to unload inventory, so stay on top of deals through
last minute booking sites like LastMinuteCruises.com and
LastMinuteTravel.com. Get a great deal and you don’t have to book 6
months in advance.”

2. Find the best-suited cruise
Whether you’re a family with two kids
under 10 looking for a memorable vacation, a couple trying to revive
some romance or a college student envisioning a trip on a fixed
income, there is a cruise, destination and price point that is
perfect for you.

“Disney cruises give families everything they’re looking for –
kid-appropriate entertainment and relaxing adult-only escapes for
parents,” Fischer says. “To spice up the romance, I recommend a
Caribbean cruise on Celebrity Solstice class ships where you can
relax and be pampered in luxury while traveling to exotic locations.
And for those college students looking for dance clubs, bars on every
floor and endless entertainment, Carnival cruises to the Bahamas are
the perfect laid back, economical vacation.”

3. Plan ahead
Book your excursions before boarding the ship. Cruise
lines generally have an updated list of shore excursions for your
cruise before departure. Many cruise lines allow for advance booking.
Book your top two or three in advance because many popular shore
excursions sell out. If you decide to wait to plan your shore
excursion, you can also book at the ship’s shore excursion desk.

4. Budget
Find out how many days you’ll be at sea and give yourself
an allotted amount to spend. Having a room key as a credit card can
make for easy spending. You don’t want to end your blissful vacation
with an excessive tab.

“Don’t bring your credit card to the island,” Fischer says. “And only
bring the amount of money with you to land that you feel comfortable
spending.”

5. What to bring
“Just pack your smile,” Fischer says. “Don’t bring
your laptop. Don’t check your email. Don’t bother bringing books to
study. The best part of a Spring Break vacation is the time to truly
relax. This is a time to let loose and have fun. You’re going to end
up packing heavy textbooks that sit on the cabin floor.”

Top 5 destinations for spring travel

February 28, 2012 by admin

1. New Orleans: Travel-Ticker says The Big Easy is the place to be in spring, especially with Jazz Fest happening in April and May. “Although the crowds may be a bit bigger than usual, this time of the year is definitely NOLA’s sweet spot for activities and weather while still offering great value.” Travel Ticker says the average rate for hotel stays during peak season is $87, only $10 more than off season reservations, making it well worth the splurge. However, don’t expect these rates during festival weekends.

My hotel picks: check out some of new hotels in New Orleans, including the newly renovated Hyatt Regency New Orleans and the Renaissance New Orleans Arts Hotel.

2. Miami: Don’t be discouraged by the thought of spring break crowds in Miami – once the big break is over, the city returns to normal and offers some of the best deals of the year. Hurricane season starts in June, so April and May are the perfect months to grab a good deal. According to Travel Ticker, you’ll save anywhere from $25-$80 a night on hotel stays during Miami’s shoulder season, when rates average $98. Compare that to peak season (December through March) prices of $122 per night.

My hotel picks: For luxury travelers, look no further than The Setai for private beach access, trendy dining options, a luxury spa and plenty of private hideaways. For budget travelers, check out the Dream South Beach, located on Collins Avenue just steps from the beach. The hotel is a new addition to the Wyndham Hotel group, is perfectly trendy and sexy in all the right Miami ways, and won’t leave you broke at check-out.

3. Tahoe: It’s not just for snowbirds. Tahoe’s prices fluctuate from January to September, with low prices concentrated in spring time, according to Travel Ticker. “During this season not only can you score great savings, but also some fantastic snow as long as winter extends into the spring months.” Tahoe hotel rates run as high as $579 per night during peak season, but in March/April, rates are as low as $69 (for budget hotels). You can also score lift tickets with your hotel stays during spring, saving you additional dollars.

My hotel picks: Northstar-at-Tahoe and the Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe are the cream of the crop. The Ritz-Carlton is perfect for couples, friends and groups looking to experience a little luxury on the slopes. Families should consider a stay at Northstar, which is its own village – complete with an ice skating rink, shops, restaurants and bars – at the bottom of the ski lift. The two hotels connect via a sky tram so you can shuffle from one to the other.

4. China: Admittedly, this choice surprised me when I saw it on the list, but I give Travel Ticker credit for thinking outside the box. China is a long flight from Boston, and certainly skews toward a more expensive trip, but if you have the means and ways it’s a fascinating destination and spring is a great time to visit if nothing else for the great weather. Travel Ticker says the top cities in China (Beijing, Shangai and Guangzhou) experience fewer crowds in March and April, making travel here a bit easier.

My travel tip: Having been to China a few times over the past few years I can safely recommend this country as a must-experience. If you can swing it this spring then go for it, but don’t do it without the help of a planned or guided tour. The tours, like those set up by Abercrombie Kent, will arrange everything from your airfare to transfers and hotel stays, keeping things easier on your end.

5. Ecuador: South America’s best bet for the Spring season is Ecuador, according to the travel site. They recommend you visit the famous Galapagos Islands, relax on pristine beaches, explore the wonders of the Amazonian rain forest or take in views of the majestic Andes mountain range. “The rain may linger in some areas, but that helps keep tourist levels and prices low. Beat the peak season rates that start in May by visiting just a month or so early,” said Travel Ticker.

Their travel tip: An eight day trip to Ecuador in March, April or May will average between $1,279 and $1,379, with the same trip in December averaging between $250 and $500 more. Save up to $1,140 per couple or $2,280 for a family of four when traveling during spring.

Readers: Where are you planning to vacation this spring?

(CNN) –

An extra day once every four years doesn’t really give travelers much more time to play, but it’s an excuse for the hospitality industry to create special Leap Year travel offers. (Each year is actually 365 days plus about 6 hours. An additional day is added to the calendar every four years to keep the calendar in sync with the seasonal year.)

Swim into San Diego. If you stay three nights at the Hotel Palomar in San Diego, the fourth night is $29. Also included are a $29 daily food and beverage credit and morning coffee and tea service in the hotel living room. The rate must be booked by February 29. Stay up all night at Disney. For the first time ever, both Disneyland in Anaheim California and Magic Kingdom Park will be open on Leap Day for 24 hours starting at 6 a.m. February 29 (Select attractions, entertainment and services will be available.) Donald Trump at a discount. Trump Hotel Collection properties in New York, Chicago, Las Vegas, Panama, Toronto and Waikiki are offering 29% off all suites booked on February 29, 2012, for stays between March 1 and April 30, 2012.

Hotwire Reveals February 2012 Travel Savings Indicator

February 28, 2012 by admin

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Hotwire.com®, a leading discount travel site, today released the February 2012 Hotwire® Travel Savings Indicator, which features the top five cities in North America where hotel, air and car rental rates have dropped the most compared with the same time last year. Using extensive pricing research to cover the three most popular travel products, the report helps guide travelers to the best destinations to maximize their travel dollars each month.

“Travelers shouldn’t rule out the idea of a winter vacation. We’re seeing some great price drops in popular destinations that have not made our list in some time, and we welcome their return,” said Clem Bason, president of the Hotwire Group. “Washington, DC and San Francisco have consistently been offering great deals throughout the season, but we’re especially excited to see places like New York City, Las Vegas and San Diego presenting themselves as great options for getaways before spring break and summer travel begins to drive prices back up.”

Hotel Price Drops

Taking the number one spot with a 22 percent decrease is the Reno/Tahoe area. Lack of snow has caused hotels in the vicinity to become more aggressive on their pricing across the board to generate more bookings. This competition has caused some big price drops and stellar deals on sites like Hotwire.

Last year, the Steelers made the NFL playoffs and made it all the way to the Super Bowl, providing a boost in hotel bookings in Pittsburgh.  This year, the team hasn’t had so much success, so the hotels that would typically sell out during home playoff games have seen less demand, causing rates to decrease significantly.  With fewer events on the calendar for the beginning of 2012, travelers should be able to find good deals.

Cincinnati, Ohio drops from number one to number three this month with a four percent decrease. Overall, 2012 is shaping up to be a slower convention year for this big Midwestern destination, and with less citywide events, hotels in the area are reacting by offering great rates to attract more leisure guests.

Las Vegas and New York City are top markets that make the list this month, both with a three percent decrease. Convention business is picking up slower than usual in Las Vegas, resulting in ample last-minute deals for leisure travelers. Since the city has seen a building boom in hotels over the past few years, this has also helped keep prices especially competitive.

New York City has not appeared as a top market for hotel deals in quite some time, but is a great value destination for travelers right now. Midtown and Times Square area hotels have had a decent January and February, but not compared to this time last year, so many properties are dropping prices to drive more reservations. Throughout the rest of the winter season, consumers will be able to find great deals at the 4.5 and 5 star levels, and for those who really know the area well, Hoboken, Jersey City and Brooklyn will have some deep discounts as well.

When compared to the same time last year, the top five hotel price reductions for February 2012 include:

Air Price Drops

All of the top price drop markets for air are offering average fares under $260 per person, an especially great value for the winter season. Oakland, Chicago and Providence each boast a four percent savings vs. the same time last year, and San Francisco and Washington, DC follow closely behind with a three percent savings each. Northern California continues to be a hot market, with both Oakland and San Francisco continuing to show up on the list over the past several months. Washington, DC appears on both the air and car rental lists, also making it a hot market for travelers.

When compared to the same time last year, the top five airfare price reductions for February 2012 include:

Car Price Drops

Consumers can find car rentals for $21 or less per day in each of the top five deal markets this month. West Coast leisure destinations San Diego and Las Vegas both make a welcome return with a 60 and 59 percent decrease, respectively, and Las Vegas in particular is a hot market for travelers, appearing on the hotel list as well. Washington, DC, Boston and Atlanta all continue their discount offerings in the car rental market, and have appeared on the list over the past few months.

When compared to the same time last year, the top five car rental price reductions for February 2012 include:

For over 10 years, Hotwire has worked with hotels, airlines and car rental companies to fill unsold inventory. As a result, Hotwire offers travelers amazing deals, every day of the year, across a variety of markets. Through Hotwire’s deep understanding of the industry and unique relationships, consumers have been able to save millions of dollars on all their travel needs.

About the Hotwire Travel Savings Indicator

The Hotwire Travel Savings Indicator runs results during the second week of each month. Results are calculated by looking at Hotwire booking data for select regions in the current month, and comparing prices in the current month against Hotwire prices in the same month in the prior year. Prices are compared within the same categories (e.g., star rating, class of car) for consistency, and the percent change in price for each region is generated as an overall average of the changes in those categories. The hotel prices in the charts above are examples for a particular Hot Rate® deal within that market. The airfare and car rental prices are average prices based on bookings across all car and seat classes. Actual prices may be higher or lower than the examples that are provided.
